I was reminded today of a song of bygone days called “Anticipation,” sung by Carly Simon. This got my mind whirling. From tiny children to senior citizens, we live in various states of anticipation. Christmas! For some, Christmas music is listened to 12 months a year, and decorations go up before Halloween. Children, in particular, anticipate Christmas’s coming with joy and exuberance saved for the very young. Birthdays! For our family, December is the month of birthdays. The ages range from 3 years to 69 years. Our grandson just celebrated his 16th birthday, and he was beyond excited. He got his driver’s permit and is learning to drive. He told me that he couldn’t believe it. This is something he had waited for his entire life! Anticipation! We anticipate many events in our lives. Children count the days until summer vacation. An engaged couple awaits the day they will be wed. The birth of a child. The first day of school. The last day of school. A new job. Retirement! Anticipation! Some events are anticipated with great joy, and others with trepidation. As I age and my aches and pains increase, I have a certain amount of trepidation. What will my future as an old woman be? I may not know what changes will happen as my physical body ages. Still, I cannot contain the anticipation of what my future holds. My eternal future. There are times that I can barely contain my excitement. The thought of being gathered up in the twinkling of an eye and meeting Jesus, my Lord, Savior, and Best Friend, in the air causes my heart to gallop. This is my hope during these times of trials and chaos, violence and destruction, fear and unrest. Sadly, I have not witnessed this anticipation of Jesus’s return among many others, even within the church. My unwavering anticipation has been met with various responses. I have met doubt, indifference, and apprehension. But rarely heartfelt jubilation (What a great word)! God does not want us to be ignorant and afraid during these times. He wants us to be prepared. The more I dig into God’s Prophetic Word, the better prepared I am to recognize the times in which we are living. I have learned that I must view the world through the Word of God and not view God’s Word through the world. Only then do we see the Truth! God’s Truth. As we travel into the new year, I pray we will dig into God’s Truth. I pray we will open our hearts and minds to His incredible promise. I pray we might cast off disbelief and fear and open our hearts and minds in Anticipation! I believe each of us was created for such a time as this. And that, my friends, causes my heart to gallop. How about yours? Hu yavo, (He will come) Sandy Wells
